Type A systems

BS8102 Code of practise for the protection of structures against water from the ground describes a Type A system as ‘barrier protection’.

When applied to the ground facing side of the structure the products need to be suited to ‘positive’ pressure and when applied on the inside ‘negative’ pressure.

There are numerous products and systems available nearly all of which, when applied externally and used in isolation, require the addition of maintainable land drainage if a guarantee is required. On occasion this may also include a Type C drainage membrane that provides a dual function of drainage layer and protection of the Type A system.

Kemper System offer a complete waterproofing and surfacing solution using specially formulated, cold liquid applied resins to produce a membrane that provides total protection in the most demanding applications.

Type C systems

Remcure Ltd are approved installers of cavity drain membrane systems from each of the featured suppliers and we are pleased to confirm that we only utilise products that have been assessed by and awarded, a British Board of Agrement Certificate.

Essentially the product ranges are designed for use in basement conversions and similar with the efficacy of each reliant on the inclusion of an effective drainage system.

In below ground structures such as basements and vaults, a sealed system is required and this will usually include the installation of a drainage channel duly connected to a sump with submersible pump.

The floor membrane selection is usually 20mm in depth, with excellent crush resistance, and lends itself to a variety of different finishes which include insulation, conventional screeds, thin layer fast drying screeds and wood based floating floors.

The wall lining membrane can be insulated, dry lined or directly plastered with the floor finishes usually determine by headroom and evenness of the existing floor surface. All membrane junctions, fixing points, service entries and other protrusions are sealed with the proprietary sealing products.

The system can be linked to the damp proof course (DPC) constructed within a new wall or to an existing or chemical DPC.

The membrane system is, relatively speaking, a fast-track application that allows various floor finishes to be achieved with zero 'down time'. The products can be used in new build, remedial or refurbishment projects for floors, and walls.

An important note to consider is that the submersible pumps are serviceable items and ought to be subjected to annual servicing under a Service Agreement with an approved servicing company. Remcure have an arrangement with a service provider to do just that.

A Type C system is considered as being the least likely to fail although we would emphasise that it may if the drainage facility is inadequate and a head of water comes to bear onto the system.
